Do you know all of them? They were/are UN Secretaries General. According to Wikipedia, the Secretary-General of the United Nations or sometimes abbreviated UNSYG, is the head of the United Nations Secretariat which is one of the principal organs of the United Nations. They also acts as the de facto spokesperson and leader of the United Nations. The Secretary-General was envisioned by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a “world moderator”, but the vague definition provided by the UN Charter left much room for interpretation by those who would later inhabit the position. According to the UN website, his roles are further defined as “diplomat and advocate, civil servant, and CEO”.

Almost everyone of us has seen or heard of the Internet scam. Some of them are very tricky. They may pretend to be very wise or to be very stupid that some people can’t judge if it is real or fake. For those who are good at verifying information, it is not really a big problem but for people who always believe what they see to be true will likely become their victims.

The way they cheat people can be very different ranging from e-mail notifying of your winning a lucky draw, e-mail asking you to assist them in getting fund left by their dead relatives, e-mail pretending to be from one of your friends who are overseas asking you to help then claiming they are in trouble, web promotion to get free job like this one and so on.

In this particular case as seen in the picture, it is a website saying you can work with them online and get paid very highly. As seen they make it so real for basic Internet users. They show the flag of the victim’s nation and testimonials from people in the country you are living based on the IP it detects. After reading all the details on their website and you feel more confident, you will be asked to register with just a few steps and they will ask you to pay the start-up membership fee and as it looks so real and easy to get the job with little job experience required, many people have fallen into their trap. For those who need jobs, they might be risking their money as it doesn’t cost too much (around $30) to get the job. As it sounds easy, some people don’t want to consult their friends and people they know about this so they risk it alone.

My point of posting this article is to alert my readers who are not familiar with this kind of scam to be careful. Internet access has become easily available to more people; meanwhile, it also has become very dangerous to surf the web from day to day.

These are just a few terms I can recall, understand and use. I believe there are some people who can use any of these but might not know the exact meaning of it and from where the term was derived as well as how it is transliterated into Khmer. Regarding my transliteration here, I don’t guarantee that it is all correct; I just transliterate based on what I hear in daily conversation. If mistakes are found, please kindly leave me a comment so I can correct it for the sake of readers.

Besides the terms listed above, there are still many commonly used terms I don’t include here because I believe that those terms are commonly understood. Those terms may include tableau, hôtel, Radio, carte etc.

Are all movies viewable for everyone? How does a movie earn a G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17 rating? The Motion Picture Association of America has set the following standards for films in order to help parents determine if the content is acceptable for viewing. Following are movie ratings:

G Rating

According to the MPAA, a “G-rated motion picture contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that, in the view of the Rating Board, would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture.” The rating does not mean the MPAA approves of the film, only that it is fit for a general audience. Additionally, the film contains no strong language, nudity, sex, or drug usage. Violence is minimal.

PG Rating

A PG-rated film may not be suitable for children. The MPAA says a PG-rated should be checked out by parents before allowing younger children to see the movie. There could be some profanity, some violence, or brief nudity; however there will not be any drug use in a PG film.

PG-13 Rating

PG-13 indicates there’s material in the film that may not be suitable for children under the age of 13. A PG-13 movie could go “beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category.” The MPAA will give this rating to films with drug use or more than brief nudity, although the nudity in a PG-13 is not sexual in nature. In addition, the MPAA states “there may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context.”

R Rating

R-ratings require a parent or adult guardian to be present in order to view the film. An R-rated film “may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously.”

NC-17 Rating

No one under the age of 17 is permitted in a theater to watch a film with this rating. The MPAA gives a film an NC-17 rating based on “violence, sex, aberrational behavior, drug abuse or any other element that most parents would consider too strong and therefore off-limits for viewing by their children.”

Based on the rating above, it is important that parents (for children), monitor the movies their children watch. Sometimes the movie is not good for their children to view. Games are also like this. If not properly monitored, your children may be at risk. While this is preventable, please have your children safe while they still can watch the movies or play the games as they are also part of your children’s learning process. MPS

n English, in some case, when you ask to buy things for a dozen, they will give you 12 because a Dozen means 12. Yet, if you ask for a Baker’s Dozen, they will give you 13. It means a Baker’s Dozen equals to 13.

In reflection to Khmer (official language of Cambodia), it is also similar in some cases. We also have such units for things that are not really expensive such as fruits, or small animals. Here are some of the examples: corns, orange, papaya, mango, etc., yet not for precious items. For the case of the mentioned items units of collections will be used. Those include មួយដំបរ(Muoy Dambor) which is equal to four, មួយឡូ (Muoy Lo) which is equal to twelve; មួយផ្លូន (Muoy Phlon) equivalent to 40, and so on. Similar to the English case of Baker’s Dozen, when Cambodian sell things, they sometimes count 50 items as one PHLON (40). Corns are mostly counted 50 as one Phlon.
